In June 15, 2014, Damon K. Jones and AJ Woodson embarked on an extraordinary journey, birthing Black Westchester Magazine into existence. Their inaugural article tackled the pressing issue of Police Brutality, illuminating a void in local news coverage from a Black perspective within Westchester. On Aug. 3, 2014, Damon and AJ extended their platform to the digital airwaves with The People Before Politics Radio show, amplifying Black voices in Westchester and providing a forum for discussions on issues impacting the community, particularly Black individuals. Then, on Aug 31, 2017, Black Westchester Magazine made its debut in print, revolutionizing the landscape of mass media for Black and Brown communities across Westchester County.
Their endeavor underscores the crucial importance of Black-owned media, serving as pillars of the Fourth Estate. Black media outlets like Black Westchester Magazine play a vital role in holding elected officials accountable and serving as protectors of public concern through the political process.
